Meghan Markle's UK Return Branded 'Dangerous Act of Desperation'

Meghan Markle's expected return to Britain alongside Prince Harry and their children has sparked fresh debate, with royal commentators questioning the timing and motives behind the visit. The Duchess of Sussex is expected to travel to Britain with Prince Harry and their children for a major Invictus Games event next month, but the visit could reignite tensions within the Royal Family rather than help heal old divisions.

A Dangerous Act of Desperation?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are understood to be planning a trip from California for an Invictus Games event marking one year until the next competition, a key milestone for the sporting tournament founded by Harry. However, some royal observers have suggested the visit could reignite tensions within the Royal Family rather than help heal old divisions.

Broadcaster Mark Dolan told The Sun the trip appeared unnecessary given the nature of the event. He said: "I mean, it's something Harry could have jumped on a Zoom and said, okay, folks, a year to go. Good luck, let's go for it. Why are they all coming for what is a nothing burger? I believe it's an act of desperation. Meghan is impervious to shame."

Dolan claimed the Sussexes may be seeking to strengthen their royal connections amid challenges facing some of their commercial ventures. He suggested the couple still benefit from their royal status and argued they need the association with the monarchy more than ever. Continuing his criticism, he said: "They need the optics, they need the titles, they need the status, they need the elevated position it gives them because at the moment, we've seen that Meghan's popularity is dropping in the United States. So it's a great moment for them and a terrible blow for Team Wales. Prince William will be furious."

Why Is the Sussexes' UK Return Attracting Attention?

The reported visit would be significant because Meghan has not travelled to Britain for several years, while Archie and Lilibet have had limited opportunities to spend time in the UK since the family relocated to California. According to News.com.au royal reporter Bronte Coy, a source close to Harry said the Duke has felt "great sadness" about being unable to bring his wife and children to Britain safely in recent years. The source claimed Harry has long wanted his children to spend more time in the country where he grew up and meet relatives they rarely see.

Could the Trip Improve Royal Relations?

Not everyone believes the visit will help repair fractured family relationships, reports The Sun. Tom Sykes, European editor-at-large for The Daily Beast, dismissed suggestions the trip could lead to reconciliation between the Sussexes and the Prince and Princess of Wales. He described claims surrounding Harry's sadness over the situation as "incredibly self-serving". Sykes added: "I've been told very frankly, by friends of William and Catherine, that they absolutely loathe them. They completely blame Meghan for what has happened."

Dolan also suggested the visit could create new difficulties for the Royal Family, warning it may provide material for future projects involving the Sussexes. He said: "It's an existential moment, because with Harry and Meghan coming back into the royal fold, as you say, with the subtle blessing of the king, we have more material for Spare Two. More material for the second season of the Harry and Meghan documentary on Netflix. More material for Meghan's forthcoming memoir. They are feeding the monster."

Will Security Concerns Affect the Visit?

Questions remain over whether the Sussexes will travel to Britain as planned following Prince Harry's long-running legal battle over his security arrangements. In 2025, Harry lost his challenge against changes to the level of taxpayer-funded protection available to him while visiting the UK after stepping back from royal duties. Despite those concerns, a royal source told The Sun that arrangements are in place which would allow the family to visit safely. Harry has returned to Britain on a number of occasions since 2020, including for family events and court hearings, but Meghan and the children have largely remained in California. If the trip goes ahead, it would mark Meghan's first visit to the UK in almost four years.
