John McEnroe has defended Wimbledon's decision to award Serena Williams a wildcard, sparking a heated exchange with a caller on BBC Radio 5 Live. The debate arose as Arthur Fery, a men's wildcard, reached the semi-finals at SW19, becoming only the second men's wildcard in Wimbledon history to achieve this feat after Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.
McEnroe clashes with caller over wildcard choice
During his radio show, a Scottish caller named Bill challenged McEnroe on whether a British woman should have received a wildcard instead of Williams. Bill argued that Fery's success highlighted the potential for British players, saying: "In the light of Arthur Fery's success at Wimbledon, would it not have been better in the women's draw to give a wildcard to a British player rather than to Serena Williams who has already had a career?"
McEnroe countered by pointing out that Wimbledon had already awarded six or seven wildcards to British players. When Bill insisted they could have given one more, McEnroe retorted: "Tell that to the BBC and their ratings when she played! The highest rating they ever had on a Tuesday. Let's be real now. What you're saying is if Roger Federer came back to play, we should give it to a British wildcard instead of Roger Federer?"
Arthur Fery's historic run
Fery, 23, beat Flavio Cobolli in straight sets on Wednesday to set up a semi-final meeting with French Open champion Alexander Zverev. He is aiming to become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon final since Andy Murray's last Grand Slam title in 2016. Fery's run has drawn comparisons to Ivanisevic's wildcard triumph in 2001.
Williams, meanwhile, was eliminated in the first round of the women's singles, losing in three sets to Maya Joint in her first singles match in four years. She then withdrew from the women's doubles with her sister Venus due to a knee injury suffered during the singles match, ending her comeback at SW19.
McEnroe stands firm
Bill continued to press his case, saying: "What would have happened if Roger Federer had got the wildcard Arthur Fery got? We'd never have heard of Arthur Fery and his career and his life changing." McEnroe replied: "Whoever the 600 guy was, he'd take it from!"
Bill concluded: "It's about British tennis isn't it? The crowd are still going to be there, the tickets are all sold..." McEnroe responded: "We're going to have to respectfully disagree with you. That's a very unusual thing." The exchange ended with McEnroe saying: "We'll keep that in mind when we speak to Tim Henman next year and he passes out the wildcards."
