Sir Paul McCartney has shared one issue with the casting of the Beatles biopics. There is much anticipation for the cinematic event series on the Fab Four, which is set to be released in 2028.
Sir Paul has spoken about the upcoming films in a new interview on Good Hang with Amy Poehler as he reflected on what it is like to see himself played by an actor. Sir Paul's story has been adapted multiple times for the screen and he shared one gripe he has felt with his previous screen incarnations.
McCartney's height concern
He told the Parks and Recreation star: "We [The Beatles] were all the same height. I've got a thing about that. Oh my God. Sam Taylor-Wood did a film called Nowhere Boy and the John [Lennon] character, is bigger than me in the film. My character is kind of wimpy, smaller. And it's like Sam, this is not true."
Amy responded: "I can't imagine what it's like to have people play you. It must be so strange. It's happening again. There's another film. The great Paul Mescal is playing you."
Director's reassurance
Sir Paul laughed that history is repeating itself as he said how Mescal is shorter than Harris Dickinson, who plays John. He responded: "And guess what? He's smaller than the guy who plays John."
Sir Paul messaged director Sir Sam Mendes as he said: "Don't do this. You said you wouldn't do it." However, he received reassurances from the director this will all be resolved in the edit.
Mescal's dedication
Sir Paul has previously hailed Mescal's dedication to getting into character. The two met ahead of filming and Sir Paul told the BBC: "He came into this office and I thought, 'Well, I'll show him how to do Blackbird'. So I picked up the guitar and started playing...and he played along exactly! I think he knew it better than I did! It was amazing how studied and how well-educated he was about me. So, yeah, I thought, OK, I'll leave you to it."
Filming for the Beatles movies has been shot in Liverpool across various periods over recent months. Mescal was spotted in character as Sir Paul during filming last month as the famous Town Hall homecoming was recreated.
The ECHO captured images of Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn and Barry Keoghan in their respective characters as Sir Paul, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The actors walked out on the balcony of the town hall as the years were rolled back to one of the most iconic moments of Beatlemania.
