Matt Damon, 55, has revealed that the one 'non-negotiable' rule he and his wife Luciana have never broken is gathering the family for dinner every night, regardless of his demanding Hollywood schedule. Speaking to People, the actor explained that this tradition has remained steadfast throughout his daughters' childhoods.
Family Dinner as a Priority
Damon, who stars in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, emphasized that family dinner is not open for debate in his household. He and Luciana raise four daughters: Alexia, 27; Isabella, 20; Gia, 17; and Stella, 15. Rather than trying to halt time as his children grow older, Damon focuses on being present. 'I feel like we are facing it and embracing the fact that it's happening,' he said. 'We've been talking a lot about presence and about really trying to be in the moment.'
A Reality Check on Distraction
However, the ritual recently received an unexpected reality check. One of his daughters pointed out that the family had spent an entire meal distracted by work and phones. 'One of my daughters said, “Well, family dinner, last night we didn’t talk,”' Damon recalled. 'Oh my gosh, you’re right.' This prompted the family to become more mindful about putting devices away and genuinely connecting during their time together.
Sacrifices and Travel
The rule has become even more meaningful given the sacrifices his family has made during his career. Damon recently brought all four daughters to the London premiere of The Odyssey, saying they deserved to celebrate after enduring a long and gruelling shoot. 'I went away for a while, they came and visited, but it was a lot,' he explained. Frequent travel has become second nature, with his daughters becoming 'seasoned travellers' who love accompanying him whenever possible.
Embracing the Next Chapter
As Damon prepares for the next chapter of family life, he acknowledges that even Oscar winners cannot stop their children from growing up. But they can ensure everyone makes it to dinner. The actor's relatable confession about tech addiction resonates with many families striving to maintain connection in a distracted world.
