Mary Berry Reveals She Thinks of Late Son William 'Every Day' 36 Years After His Death

Mary Berry has revealed that she thinks of her late son William 'every day', 36 years after he died in a car accident at the age of 19. The former Great British Bake Off star, now 90, spoke to Radio Times about the tragedy, which occurred in 1989 while William was visiting home from Bristol University.

Berry said: 'I think of William every day. Of course I do. And if he were to walk through that door over there, I would say, "Where the hell have you been?"' She added that she remains proud of him and focuses on the joy he brought, while also counting herself lucky to have her other two children, Annabel and Tom, and her grandchildren.

The accident happened when William borrowed a sports car, taking his sister Annabel with him. Berry recalled on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast that he drove too fast, which was out of character. She described the moment she saw Annabel in hospital after the crash, saying: 'I suddenly saw Annabel, in a pink tracksuit, running up towards me, and I thought "I've still got her."'

Berry has been married to Paul Hunnings, 93, since 1966. She attributes their long marriage to never arguing and having respect for one another. 'If any disagreements come up, I open the back door and just go out and maybe pick some flowers or get some apples. It's amazing if you can walk away,' she said.
