Margot Robbie Opens Up About Marriage and Memorable UK Christmas Mishap
Australian actress Margot Robbie has offered rare insights into her marriage with producer Tom Ackerley, describing him as her "perfect match" while recounting a hilarious cooking disaster during a UK Christmas celebration. The 35-year-old star made these personal revelations during an appearance on the Table Manners podcast with hosts Jessie and Lennie Ware, where she promoted her upcoming film Wuthering Heights alongside co-star Jacob Elordi.
Culinary Praise and Relationship Revelations
During the podcast conversation, which naturally turned to food topics, Robbie enthusiastically praised her husband's exceptional cooking abilities. "My husband is a phenomenal cook - he could be a chef he is so good," she declared. "We are like a perfect match." The actress admitted she only discovered Ackerley's culinary talents after their marriage, noting his dedication to elaborate dishes that require multiple days of preparation.
Robbie detailed specific examples of her husband's kitchen prowess, explaining: "He spends two days making a spaghetti bolognese. He does a three-day fried rice with Korean short ribs. He does steak better than any restaurant I've ever been to!" The couple first met in 2013 on the set of Suite Française and initially lived as friends with roommates in Clapham, London, before developing a romantic connection and marrying in 2016.
Christmas Cooking Catastrophe
The most entertaining revelation came when Robbie described a significant cooking error during her first Christmas with Ackerley's family in the United Kingdom. Eager to contribute to the holiday meal, she volunteered to prepare the traditional ham, unaware of crucial differences between Australian and British preparation methods.
"Ham at Christmas time in Australia is essential," Robbie explained. "It is pre-cooked ham over there and then you heat it up in the oven - it doesn't take long. So when I did my first Christmas over here with Tom's family I was like 'oh I'll do the ham don't worry.'"
The actress visited a local butcher and purchased what she believed was appropriate meat, but actually obtained uncooked gammon. "It was a huge piece of pork and I cooked it for only three hours and it was completely raw inside," she confessed. The situation became particularly dramatic when Ackerley's grandmother nearly consumed the undercooked meat. "I watched his grandma nearly put a raw piece of pork in her mouth. She could have died so I slapped it out of her hand!" The podcast hosts found the story immensely amusing, informing Robbie that such a large cut of meat requires substantially longer cooking times.
Wild London Party Days
Beyond domestic revelations, Robbie shared colorful anecdotes about her earlier years living in London, admitting to being ejected from numerous nightlife venues. She specifically mentioned the infamous Infernos nightclub in Clapham, which she visited with friends after hearing claims that "you can't get kicked out." This assertion proved incorrect when security removed her group within fifteen minutes of arrival.
"And while we're getting dragged out by security, I was screaming, 'but this is Infernos, you can't get kicked out of Infernos,'" Robbie recalled. "And the bouncer was like, 'Look, we allow most things, but when your friend does [redacted], then we kick you out.' And I was like, 'okay, fair enough!'" She added that "most of the clubs in Clapham, I'd say, have kicked us out" and that her group faced temporary bans from several establishments.
Hen Party Memories and Production Company Success
Robbie also discussed her pre-wedding celebrations, revealing details about her boozy hen party that featured a Harry Potter-themed stripper. "My friends got a stripper and made him do Harry Potter," she remembered. "It was so funny and not sexy, and like, he was in a robe with the glasses, the scar, and all the innuendo that you can imagine. And it was very, very funny, but we were all so drunk, it really didn't matter, to be honest!"
The actress reflected on her time living with friends in Clapham, describing it as "the best days of my life" and noting the group's close bond led them to establish production company Lucky Chap in 2015. Founded with Ackerley and friends Sophia Kerr and Josey McNamara, the company has achieved remarkable success with films including I, Tonya and Promising Young Woman, both earning Academy Awards. The company, now valued at approximately £25 million, focuses on creating female-driven stories and recently produced the blockbuster Barbie.
Promotional Appearances and Australian Traditions
During her promotional tour for Wuthering Heights, Robbie made additional media appearances, including a segment on Heart Radio with presenter Amanda Holden. The interview featured an unusual drinking ritual as Holden presented shoe-shaped bottles for a "shoey" - an Australian tradition involving drinking from footwear. "This is a very elegant shoey," Robbie commented. "Usually you do it out of some mangy old sneaker." The pair then drank from their respective bottles, with Robbie selecting the alcoholic beer option.
Throughout these various appearances, Robbie has offered fans unprecedented glimpses into both her personal life with husband Tom Ackerley and her memorable experiences during her formative years in London, blending heartfelt relationship insights with humorous anecdotes about culinary mishaps and youthful adventures.
