Lindsay Lohan has described her early experience of fame as 'overwhelming', reflecting on the challenges she faced as a young actress in Hollywood. The 39-year-old star, who rose to prominence with the 1998 Disney film The Parent Trap, told Vogue Arabia that fame was a 'double-edged sword'.
Lohan admitted she wished she had listened to her parents and moved back to New York instead of staying in Los Angeles. 'I was young and wanted to be in LA. And I didn't know,' she said. 'So yeah, while a lot of it was fun, it was hard when I was young. It was a double-edged sword.'
The actress, best known for her role in Mean Girls, questioned why no one intervened to protect her. 'Now I look back and wonder, “Why didn’t anyone just go and take me out of there, protect me more?” You don’t know how to do that yourself when you’re a teenager.'
Lohan, who is married to financier Bader Shammas, moved to Dubai in 2014 to escape the pressures of fame. She said she does not regret the decision, adding: 'I wasn’t finding roles I loved. It’s not a life I wanted to live, you know? It’s not a real life. It pushed me so far away that I moved to the other side of the world. And I’m so glad I followed my gut.'
The star also credited her husband with changing her outlook. She told People magazine: 'My husband has taught me, “You have to be prepared for other things, so you don’t get disappointed.” ... You are your own vessel. If you don’t nurture yourself, anything can distract you in a second.'
