TV explorer Levison Wood narrowly escaped death after a Jeep he was travelling in careered off a narrow road in the Venezuelan jungle and overturned. The adventurer, 43, fractured his elbow in the accident, which occurred in late November while filming a new documentary.
Wood, a former Parachute Regiment officer, was travelling with his girlfriend Ana Protasio and their daughter Maya, but they were not in the vehicle at the time. The crash happened near the coastal town of Mochima, after the team left Caracas.
Video footage shows Wood wincing in pain as he climbs out of the overturned SUV through the passenger door. He feared the vehicle could catch fire, as it carried around 80 litres of petrol. 'The first instance was we've got to get out of this car, before it blows off,' he told the Daily Mail.
Two cameramen, Neil and Alberto, were also injured. Wood compared the incident to a 2015 crash in Nepal, where a taxi plunged 150ft off a cliff. 'It's just chaos,' he said, adding that his elbow remains painful to touch.
The three-part documentary will see Wood travel over 8,000 miles through seven countries in South America, his longest journey to date.
