Keith Urban Opens Up About 'Soul-Sucking Routine' Amid Nicole Kidman Split

Keith Urban has spoken candidly about breaking free from a 'soul-sucking routine' following his separation from Nicole Kidman. The country singer, 57, discussed the meaning behind his song 'Straight Line' from his new album 'High' during the premiere of his series 'The Road'. He described the track as being about 'wanting to break out of a soul-sucking routine that you might be stuck in'—whether in a relationship, job, or with creativity.

In the debut episode of his CBS and Paramount competition series, Urban also opened up about the emotional toll of touring. He described waking up on a tour bus at 3:30 a.m., feeling sick and lonely, and questioning his career. 'The only answer can be: Because this is what I'm born to do,' he said, adding that touring can be 'miserable' but is a calling.

Urban's comments come weeks after Kidman filed for divorce on September 30 in Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, married for 19 years, had been living separately since earlier this summer due to conflicting work commitments, including Urban's world tour and Kidman's projects such as 'Practical Magic 2' and 'Big Little Lies'. Reports suggest the idea to separate came from Urban.

In a separate interview with Harper's Bazaar, Kidman reflected on overcoming 'painful' and 'devastating' moments. Without directly referencing the split, she said: 'No matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through. You're going to have to feel it.' She added that moving gently and slowly helps, and that she has survived feeling 'broken' before.
