Katie Piper Gives Rare Insight Into Decade-Long Marriage and Surprising Biological Age
In an exclusive interview, Katie Piper has shared a rare glimpse into her 10-year marriage with husband Richard Sutton, alongside the astonishing revelation that her biological age is just 22. The former model, now 42, met Sutton through mutual friends in 2013, and the couple tied the knot two years later in 2015. They are parents to two daughters, Belle, aged 11, and Penelope, eight, and celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary last year.
Wellness Journey and Biological Age Shock
Katie Piper's focus on wellness over the past decade has yielded remarkable results. Appearing on Katherine Ryan's podcast, What's My Age Again?, in December, her biological age was tested and revealed to be 22, a fact that left her shocked. She attributes this to a serious commitment to lifestyle and wellness since becoming a mother in 2014.
"I had a fun past in my teens and early twenties, and then I had a complex medical past in my twenties and thirties," Katie explains. "But since becoming a mum I have really taken lifestyle and wellness seriously. I'm not a wellness bore — I'll still have a glass of rosé at the weekend. But I've always been a massive advocate for accountability. It's treating your mental and physical health a bit like a job."
She emphasizes that without managing life proactively, it can start to manage you, leading to things unraveling. This mindset has been crucial in her recovery and ongoing health after surviving a life-changing acid attack in 2008, which thrust her into the public eye.
Marriage as a Discipline and Family Life
Reflecting on her marriage, Katie describes it as a discipline that requires continuous effort. "I think that marriage is a discipline. Love is amazing, but it's not enough. Marriage is a choice and a commitment that you have to keep showing up for," she says. She was cautious about posting online during their anniversary, mindful of those who might struggle with relationships, having experienced similar feelings herself when single.
The couple's family plans evolved when they decided to try for another baby three years ago. However, an emergency operation on Katie's left eye, blinded during the 2008 attack, put their plans on hold. After considering IVF, she opted out due to the emotional toll and hospital visits, accepting that she won't have another child. Instead, they welcomed a puppy named Sugar from Battersea Dogs And Cats Home, which she compares to having a newborn.
Parenting in the Smartphone Era
As a mother, Katie is navigating the challenges of modern parenting, especially with her eldest daughter, Belle, starting secondary school. She admits to bittersweet feelings about her children growing up, embracing change and acceptance as new chapters open.
Katie is vocal about social media, supporting Australia's ban and advocating for regulation. Belle has a phone but no social media access, as Katie believes it's an adult world. "It's really positive what Australia did and we'll all look back in years to come and be shocked at how unregulated things once were," she notes, emphasizing solidarity over blame for parents.
Advocacy and Authentic Partnerships
Beyond family, Katie is known for her advocacy work. She launched The Katie Piper Foundation in 2009 to support burns survivors and serves as an ambassador for Women's Aid, focusing on data-driven discussions about violence against women. She also partners with Surcare as a brand consultant, promoting sensitive skin cleaning products based on her personal experiences with eczema.
"It has authenticity at its core and it's grounded in my own experiences of dealing with sensitive skin," she says, highlighting the importance of dermatologically tested products in daily life.
