Heathers Star Kate Rockwell Slams Drunken Hecklers and Sing-Along Fans
American actress Kate Rockwell has unleashed a frustrated tirade targeting drunken audience members and rowdy superfans disrupting performances of Heathers: The Musical. The 41-year-old performer, currently starring off-Broadway, took to Instagram to rage about inappropriate theatre behaviour and discuss proper audience etiquette.
Passionate Plea to Young Theatre Enthusiasts
Rockwell first addressed what she called "incredibly passionate, devoted fans" of the musical, which is based on the 1988 cult film. "I know it is exciting to see a show you love," she wrote, acknowledging their enthusiasm. "Heathers has some incredibly passionate, devoted fans and we love to see that."
However, she quickly adopted what she described as her "mom voice" to deliver a stern message:
- Singing along at full volume during performances
- Attempting choreography from your seat
- Screaming lines along with the actors
"This is not 'fun' for us onstage," Rockwell emphasized. "It doesn't make you a part of the action — and it's wildly distracting to both the actors onstage and to the rest of the audience."
Scathing Critique of Drunken Audience Members
The actress then turned her attention to what she described as adults who had been "over-served at the lobby bar." Her criticism was particularly pointed toward those who think it's acceptable to scream comments during performances.
"If you're an adult, and you think it's 'fun' or 'cute' to scream sh*t at the actors, or comment on what you're watching, or you had one too many cocktails and you've lost your ability to be a decent human being at someone else's workplace..." Rockwell wrote, before delivering her blunt advice: "See. yourself. out."
She emphasized that live theatre requires concentration and deserves respect, adding: "Who do you think you are, taking away from the rest of the audience's experience?! Grow up."
Clear Alternatives for Enthusiastic Fans
Rockwell offered specific alternatives for fans wanting to express their enthusiasm:
- Sing along with cast recordings at home
- Watch "slime tutorials" (unauthorized recordings) without disrupting live performances
- Practice choreography in private spaces like living rooms or schools
Her central message remained clear: "Please, when you're in the audience, let us do the work. That's what you paid for!!" For those unwilling to follow this basic etiquette, she had even simpler advice: "If you want to talk through something, stay home and watch Netflix."
Background and Professional Standing
Kate Rockwell joined the cast of Heathers: The Musical last year as a temporary replacement for Kerry Butler in the role of teacher Ms. Fleming. The musical has been running off-Broadway since 2014. Rockwell's substantial theatre credentials include starring roles in:
- Bring It On: The Musical
- Rock Of Ages
- Mean Girls
- The Sound of Music
Her Instagram outburst represents a growing concern among theatre professionals about declining audience behaviour post-pandemic, with many performers reporting increased incidents of disruption during live performances.
