Julio Iglesias Denies Sexual Assault Allegations

Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has denied allegations of sexual abuse made by two former female employees, calling the claims “absolutely false”. The 82-year-old entertainer broke his silence on Friday in an Instagram post, stating he has never “abused, coerced or disrespected any woman”.

The allegations, which emerged on Tuesday following a joint investigation by Spanish news site elDiario.es and Univision Noticias, involve two women who worked at Iglesias’s Caribbean mansions. They accuse him of sexual assault, inappropriate touching, insults and humiliation, creating an atmosphere of control and constant harassment. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred in 2021.

The women, identified by the pseudonyms Rebeca and Laura, have filed a complaint at Spain’s Audiencia Nacional, accusing Iglesias of sexual assault and human trafficking. Rebeca, a domestic worker, claims Iglesias would call her to his room and penetrate her without consent. Laura, a physical therapist, alleges he kissed her and touched her breasts against her will.

In a statement, Iglesias expressed regret over the accusations and said he would defend his dignity. He thanked supporters for their messages of love. The case is under preliminary investigation by prosecutors at the Audiencia Nacional.

ElDiario.es also reported that Rebeca and another former worker, Carolina, claimed they were required to undergo medical tests for sexually transmitted diseases. Medical documents obtained by the outlet suggest five women employed at Iglesias’s Dominican Republic villa in 2021 had gynaecological examinations.

Laura told elDiario.es that she and Rebeca decided to file a complaint to encourage other victims to come forward, saying: “We’re sending a message to all the victims of this person – Julio Iglesias – so that they can speak out and believe in justice.”
