Joanna Page's Emotional Family Realisation Leaves Her in Tears

Joanna Page, the beloved actress famed for her role as Stacey West in the hit BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, has shared a deeply personal and emotional admission about her family life that recently left her in floods of tears. The 48-year-old star, known for her vibrant personality, revealed how a poignant realisation about the fleeting nature of time with her children triggered an overwhelming emotional response.

A Heartfelt Conversation About Mortality

In a candid interview, Joanna disclosed that just the day before, she had been discussing funeral plans with her husband, former Emmerdale actor James Thornton, 50. She recounted telling him, "I've already decided that when I die, I want you to lay me in the coffin, place all of the children's artwork on top of me, put the lid down and I'll be buried with it." His reaction was one of mild exasperation, but this conversation underscored her preoccupation with life's impermanence.

The Catalyst: Her Daughter's Thirteenth Birthday

At their home in Oxfordshire, Joanna and James are raising four children: Eva, 13, Kit, 10, Noah, eight, and Boe, four, alongside two dogs and four guinea pigs. It was Eva's recent 13th birthday that profoundly affected Joanna, sparking fears about the future. "We don't have that many years left before she goes away to drama school or something and that has started to panic me a bit," she explained. "The thought of her suddenly not being in the house makes me feel emotional. The other day, I sat in the bedroom and just cried and cried. I thought, 'Life as I know it now... one day, it's not going to be like this. Me and James will be left on our own here and they'll be off, forming their own families.'"

Career Shifts and Family Priorities

Swansea-born Joanna rose to fame in 2007 with Gavin & Stacey, following earlier roles in David Copperfield and Love Actually, and later as Queen Elizabeth I in Doctor Who. After becoming a mother in 2013, she deliberately slowed her acting career, taking nearly a decade off before transitioning into presenting roles on shows like ITV's The Pet Show and BBC Two's Wild Life. She is set to return to BBC One with the upcycling challenge series Shift The Thrift next month.

Despite a busy year that included publishing her autobiography Lush! My Story, a book tour, and launching a weekly podcast also titled Lush!, Joanna has recently turned down two acting roles to prioritise family. "I thought, 'My gosh, I don't want to do that. I don't want to go away for three months. I want to be with the kids, with my family and to enjoy myself,'" she said, emphasising her enjoyment of presenting and being her own boss.

Strengthening Marriage Through Podcasting

Her podcast, focusing on family life, marriage, and midlife, has unexpectedly become a tool for marital enrichment. With her husband as the sole guest so far, Joanna revealed that their weekly two-hour recordings have revitalised their relationship. "We talked non-stop and it was wonderful," she said. "Every single Friday, when I'm recording my episodes, it's becoming our couples therapy." This has even helped resolve minor disputes, such as a recent argument over household chaos involving bins, gardeners, and a heating engineer.

Embracing Simple Pleasures and Future Plans

Joanna and James still make time for romance, recently booking a Travelodge for a few hours before attending a Strictly Come Dancing show. She is also supporting National Lottery Open Week in March, appreciating affordable family outings. In terms of self-care, she rejects overwhelming wellness advice, opting for moderation with treats like popcorn, crisps, cake, and French martinis, alongside daily dog walks and jigsaw puzzles.

Creatively, Joanna is inspired by Gavin & Stacey writer Ruth Jones and plans to write children's stories and a novel. While she cherishes memories of the Gavin & Stacey finale in 2024, she confirms no further episodes are planned. As she approaches 50 next March, she is determined to embrace a year of freedom, impulsivity, and self-care, including yoga, massages, and outdoor swimming. "I'm going to embrace just being alive," she affirmed, highlighting her renewed focus on living fully in the present.
