Jimmy Kimmel's Return Delayed as Sinclair Stations Refuse to Air Show

Jimmy Kimmel's return to television has been delayed after the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates 38 ABC stations across the US, announced it would preempt 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and replace it with news programming. The decision follows Kimmel's comments on the death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk, who was shot at a university event in Utah.

Sinclair stated that discussions with ABC are ongoing as they evaluate the show's potential return. The broadcaster previously declared it would keep Kimmel off-air until formal discussions are held regarding professionalism and accountability. Sinclair also called for Kimmel to apologise to Kirk's family and make a meaningful donation to the Kirk family and Turning Point USA.

Disney, which owns ABC, had suspended the show for a week to avoid inflaming tensions. The company said it decided to return the show on Tuesday after thoughtful conversations with Kimmel. However, Sinclair's refusal to air the programme has created a major setback for the comedian's comeback.

Kimmel had criticised the far-right for trying to blame the political left for Kirk's death, noting that the alleged shooter was raised in a conservative family. He also questioned Donald Trump's response to the tragedy, as the president discussed White House ballroom construction instead.

Disney's decision to suspend the show drew criticism from free speech advocates, while fellow late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert called it 'blatant censorship'. Trump, however, congratulated ABC on Truth Social for 'finally having the courage to do what had to be done'.
