Husband Guilty of Raping, Murdering Wife, Staging Suicide

Michael Thompson, 56, has been found guilty of raping and murdering his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, 43, before attempting to stage her death as a suicide. The verdict was delivered after a six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

Background of the Case

The couple, from Northampton, had been separated for two years following a 19-year marriage, though they continued to live in the same house on Pinewood Road while their divorce was nearing finalization. Jurors heard that Kimberley, known as Kim, had been planning to move on with her life and had a separate bedroom from Thompson in the family home.

The Crime and Cover-Up

Prosecutors stated that between midnight and 3:30 AM on August 9 last year, Thompson entered Kim's bedroom, raped her, and suffocated her. He then staged the room to make it appear she had died by suicide and posted messages on her social media accounts. At around 5:30 AM, Thompson called East Midlands Ambulance Service, claiming his wife had taken her own life.

However, Kim's family and friends told police they did not believe she had died by suicide, noting she had been making plans for the future and revealing a history of domestic abuse throughout the relationship. A murder investigation was launched on August 12, and Thompson was arrested. He was subsequently found guilty of rape, murder, and two counts of perverting the course of justice—one for covering up the rape and the other for covering up the murder.

History of Domestic Abuse

During the trial, jurors heard that Kim had experienced years of domestic abuse, including coercive and controlling behavior as well as physical violence. The court also learned that she contacted a domestic abuse support service in 2013 but later withdrew her complaint due to fear of repercussions.

Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: "I hope today provides Kim's family and friends with some comfort. It became clear throughout our investigation that Kim had been subjected to domestic abuse for much of her relationship with Thompson, with manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence the norm. Over the years Thompson stripped Kim's confidence away but in the time since their separation, friends and family began to see the old Kim re-emerging with a renewed enthusiasm for life."

Impact on Loved Ones

DCI Harrison added: "Not only did Thompson brutally rape and murder Kim, he took the time to stage her death in order to make people believe she had committed suicide before calling for help. I have no doubt these actions caused further upset to Kim's loved ones, who have shown an enormous amount of grace and dignity throughout our investigation and during the trial."

Sentencing and Appeal for Help

Thompson is due to be sentenced next week. DCI Harrison urged anyone living with domestic abuse to seek help, stating: "The level of abuse Kim was subjected to over the last two decades was horrific, and I want to take this opportunity to say to anyone who may be living a similar life that help is available. We have specialist police officers who work with survivors of domestic abuse, including coercive control and physical abuse, and there are other organisations that also offer support and practical help if you don't want to speak to the police. My plea to anyone who finds themself in this situation is to please ask for help, no one will judge you, but we can help you take that first step to becoming safe."
