Jilly Cooper's Funeral Plans Revealed: Champagne, Orchestra, and a 'Big Party'

Dame Jilly Cooper, the beloved author known for her scandalous novels such as Riders and Rivals, has died at the age of 88 following a fall at her home. Her children, Felix and Emily, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, describing her as 'the shining light in all of our lives' and expressing their shock at her unexpected death.

Before her death, Cooper had openly discussed her funeral wishes, which include champagne, chocolates, and a performance by the Royal Opera House orchestra. She also requested a copy of Pope John Paul II's record, calling it 'a terrific suck-up present to either God or the Devil'. The funeral will be private, in line with her wishes, but a public service of thanksgiving is planned for later this year at Southwark Cathedral.

Cooper's musical choices for the service are grand, featuring Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand, Verdi's Requiem, and Wagner's Parsifal. She also specified readings, including poems by Lord Byron and Christina Rossetti. After the funeral, a 'big party' will be held in her Gloucestershire garden, overlooking the valley, where friends and family can celebrate her life.

Cooper had previously spoken about her thoughts on death, saying she imagined arriving in heaven to be greeted by her dogs running across a sunlit lawn. She will be buried near her dogs' graveyard, with a slate headstone engraved with an image of her favourite dog, Barbara.
