Jezebel has removed an article titled “We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk” following the assassination of the conservative influencer on September 10. The piece, published two days prior, was taken down on legal advice, the outlet stated.
An editor’s note explained the article was intended as satire and that Jezebel stands by its content, but removed it out of caution and compassion for the victim’s family. The note added that the decision was not a change in editorial judgment and that the article may be republished later.
The original article described paying Etsy sellers to cast hexes on Kirk, including spells to “make everyone hate him” and a “powerful hex.” The author wrote she wished only minor annoyances, such as a zit or microphone malfunction, and concluded with “May the rash come swiftly.”
Jezebel owner Paste Media Group condemned the violence in a statement, calling the piece a satirical response to Kirk’s rhetoric. The site, owned by Paste Media, was acquired from G/O Media in November 2023 and relaunched under editor-in-chief Lauren Tousignant.
