Jesy Nelson Reveals Traumatic Impact of Twin Daughters' Diagnosis on Relationship

Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson has candidly disclosed that the immense strain of her twin daughters' rare genetic condition diagnosis ultimately led to the end of her four-year relationship with fiancé Zion Foster. The couple, who had been engaged for just four months, made the difficult decision to separate following the life-altering news about their children's health.

The Heartbreaking Diagnosis That Changed Everything

Jesy Nelson and Zion Foster's world was turned upside down when their twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with SMA Type 1 just six months after their birth in May. Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 is a rare genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting, presenting significant challenges for affected families.

The 34-year-old singer from Romford, east London, explained in an emotional interview with the Daily Mail how this traumatic experience fundamentally altered the dynamic between her and 27-year-old R&B singer Foster. "We have been through such a traumatic experience and for us, our girls are our main priority and our main focus," Nelson revealed.

Prioritising Co-Parenting Amid Relationship Strain

Despite their separation, both Nelson and Foster remain committed to providing the best possible care for their daughters. "We want to give them the most positive, happy and uplifting time and energy," Nelson continued, "and because we have both been through such a traumatic experience, the energy wasn't right between us, which is understandable."

The singer emphasised that their focus has shifted entirely to co-parenting, stating: "We are still friends and we are still united in co-parenting our daughters, they are our main focus, that's all we can do, be the best possible parents we can right now."

A Complicated Pregnancy Journey

The couple's path to parenthood was already challenging before the SMA diagnosis. During her pregnancy, Nelson discovered her daughters were monochorionic diamniotic identical twins who had developed twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, a rare condition where both babies share a placenta unevenly.

Nelson's pregnancy journey and the subsequent diagnosis will feature prominently in her upcoming Prime Video series, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, which documents every aspect of her experience. The series will showcase the close bond she once shared with Foster, whom she described just months before their split as her "best friend."

Campaigning for Newborn Screening

The family's experience has brought renewed attention to the importance of early detection for SMA. Since their diagnosis, momentum has grown for the Mirror's campaign advocating for every newborn to receive a simple £5 blood test on the NHS to screen for the condition.

Nelson remains focused on taking each day as it comes, explaining: "I am taking each day as it comes because I feel like right now, especially with the girls' diagnosis, it's all I can really do. If I try to look too far into the future, I will drive myself crazy. The girls are doing really well and they're happy, that's all I can really ask for."

The singer's revelation comes at a poignant moment as she prepares to share her deeply personal journey with the public through her documentary series, highlighting both the joys and profound challenges of her recent experiences.
