The South African football community is in mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just days after he represented his country at the FIFA World Cup. The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) confirmed his passing on Saturday, alongside the Ministry of Sport, Arts & Culture. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
World Cup Hero
Adams started two of South Africa's three group stage matches at the World Cup and came off the bench in a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea. That win secured Bafana Bafana's place in the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation's history. He was an unused substitute in the round of 16 loss to Canada.
Tributes from SAFPU
In a statement released on Saturday, SAFPU expressed devastation at the loss. "The South African Football Players Union is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams," the statement read. "Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large." The union extended condolences to his family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, and all those whose lives he touched.
Minister's Tribute
Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, paid tribute to Adams, recalling the player's quiet demeanor during a match against Czechia shortly after his grandmother's death. "I recall noting how unusually quiet Jayden seemed on the bench in the second half, after he had been substituted - it was only afterwards that we learnt he had taken to the field that day carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother, Marianna, who had passed away only hours before kick-off," McKenzie said. "When I reached out to Jayden to offer my condolences and encouragement, I shall carry forever the humble, appreciative response he gave me. That he chose to wear the national jersey and give his all for his country in that moment speaks to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years, and it reflects the calibre of young man South Africa has lost."
Personal Loss
Adams' grandmother, Marianna Adams, passed away just a day before South Africa faced Czechia in a Group A match at Atlanta Stadium. SAFA president Danny Jordaan had offered condolences at the time, saying, "This is a massive loss for Jayden's family, friends and relatives and we join in mourning the loss of his grandmother." Adams is survived by his partner Aqueelah Adendorf and their five-year-old daughter.
Appeal for Privacy
McKenzie appealed to the media and public to refrain from speculation about the cause of death. "The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time," he said. "Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course."
