ITV Star's Near-Death Balcony Fall Led to Career Rethink

ITV Presenter's Holiday Horror: A Balcony Fall That Altered Everything

ITV News host and former Dancing on Ice star Lucrezia Millarini has opened up about a terrifying near-death experience that dramatically reshaped her career path. The 50-year-old journalist detailed how falling from a first-floor balcony while on holiday led her to reassess her life entirely.

The Accident That Changed Everything

Speaking exclusively to Woman Weekly Magazine, Millarini recounted the harrowing incident that occurred during a holiday in Zante. "While on holiday in Zante, I fell from a first-floor balcony and came terrifyingly close to breaking my back," she revealed. "Everything happened in an instant."

The presenter described dragging herself to the flat below, collapsing on the floor, and only later realizing she was bleeding. The couple staying there immediately called an ambulance, and she was soon airlifted to mainland Greece and sedated for treatment.

From Law to Journalism: A Bold Career Shift

At the time of the accident, Millarini was training to become a barrister, having attended Bar school and being just a pupillage away from qualifying. "As the first person in my family to go to university, I went on to Bar school and was just a pupillage away from becoming a barrister when my life took a dramatic turn," she explained.

The near-death experience prompted profound reflection. "Sometimes life sends you a message you can't ignore – and this was mine," Millarini stated. Realizing a future in law wasn't for her, she made what she calls a "bold decision" to return to university and study broadcast journalism instead.

Building a New Career at ITV

This career pivot proved successful. Millarini joined ITV News London in 2010 as an entertainment correspondent and now regularly presents both the ITV Evening News and the ITV Lunchtime News. Her broadcasting career has flourished despite – or perhaps because of – the life-altering accident.

Stepping Out of Her Comfort Zone

Six years ago, Millarini further demonstrated her willingness to embrace new challenges by participating in Dancing on Ice. Partnered with American skater Brendyn Hatfield, she impressed with her efforts despite being eliminated earlier than hoped during musicals week after performing to Mamma Mia.

Reflecting on the experience, she said: "I've enjoyed it, it's been the craziest, weirdest thing I've done in my life. It's been real fun." She also shared an amusing anecdote about her ITV colleagues presenting her with padded knickers for "bum support" when her participation was announced.

A Life of Diverse Experiences

Beyond her news presenting and ice skating venture, Millarini has appeared on various other television shows including The Weakest Link, The Chase, and Celebrity Hunted. Her diverse experiences reflect the career transformation that began with that fateful balcony fall.

The incident, while terrifying, ultimately guided Millarini toward a path that better suited her talents and aspirations. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of how unexpected events can sometimes redirect us toward our true calling.
