ITV has come under fire for alleged sexism after featuring female football manager Emma Hayes in a kitchen set during England's World Cup match against Croatia. The segment, aired during a hydration break, showed Hayes explaining tactics using a chalkboard in a studio designed to resemble a kitchen, prompting a wave of criticism on social media.
Viewers React to the Controversial Segment
As players paused for water, ITV cut to Hayes, who provided analysis from the kitchen set. Many viewers expressed outrage, calling the concept outdated and demeaning. Presenter Cristo Foufas shared a clip on X, questioning whether ITV was advancing gender equality in football by placing Hayes in a kitchen.
One commenter wrote: "Surely they could give her a digital screen and a mouse. The two chalkboards go with the kitchen. I wonder what her Croatian counterpart has been given to explain the gameplay." Another said: "We honestly thought it was a skit. Whose mum is this? Why's she in a half-built kitchen?"
Mixed Opinions on the Analysis
While some criticized the setting, others praised Hayes' analysis. One viewer noted: "I thought she analyzed the game and tactics superbly well. You can tell why she coaches at national level." Another added: "Emma's analysis is excellent, but the camera angles and set looked off."
ITV has been contacted for comment regarding the backlash. The network has yet to respond publicly.
