Hamilton's summer gala day proved a shining success on Saturday, July 4, 2026, despite hundreds of visitors swapping sunglasses and T-shirts for umbrellas and jackets on an "absolutely wild" July day. Performers and shoppers danced in the rain as the town-centre showpiece brought a busy programme of live entertainment and market stalls to Quarry Street.
Community Spirit Shines Through Rain
Organisers from local business organisation Hamilton Our Town praised all who attended, saying: "Well done Hamilton! A huge thank you to everyone who came along, got involved, and brought the smiles, waterproofs and good vibes." The event marked the launch of the town's month-long Summerfest, which runs through August 1 and includes Commonwealth Games activities, Lego days, football, crafting, and tours of the town's landmark mausoleum, culminating in Lanarkshire Pride.
Business improvement group manager Malcolm Thomas-Harley told the Hamilton Advertiser: "Despite the difficult weather conditions, we were absolutely delighted by the fantastic community spirit and support shown throughout the day. The rain certainly made its presence felt, but so did the people of Hamilton. Seeing people dancing in the rain, cheering on the performers and making the most of the day was a brilliant reminder of the resilience, humour and positivity in our community. It showed that even a downpour won't stop Hamilton from coming together and having a great day out."
Entertainment and Market Highlights
The weekend event on Quarry Street featured a host of musical performances at the historic bandstand, along with attractions including a drumming band, walking theatre, circus skills, and BMX tricks. Market visitors enjoyed a huge range of gifts, crafts, and bakery treats, as well as face painting, balloons, and play equipment.
Hamilton Our Town added: "The weather may have been absolutely wild, but Hamilton definitely did not let a bit of rain stop the fun! A massive shout-out to Halo Arts and their amazing team for producing and delivering the event with us in some seriously soggy conditions – they were absolute stars; and thank you to the people of Hamilton for showing once again that our town centre spirit shines through!"
Upcoming Summerfest Events
Summerfest Hamilton is described as "all about bringing energy, colour and activity into the town centre during the holidays." Malcolm Thomas-Harley noted: "It's about giving people even more reasons to come into the town centre, to enjoy what's on, support local businesses and see Hamilton full of life."
Among the next events are mausoleum tours on Saturday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 15, plus a busy day on Saturday, July 18, when Low Parks Museum hosts Lego Club and the Regent Centre welcomes a Nerf battle arena. The indoor shopping centre will also host a free Commonwealth Games-themed event, Going for Gold, from July 22-24, offering taster sessions of martial arts, wheelchair basketball, football, and yoga, and giving the chance to discover local sports clubs, community groups, and organisations. Summerfest this week also includes a children's colouring competition, summer crochet competition, and "turn up and play" football at Hamilton Palace sports grounds.
