Hal Williams, the beloved comedy actor best known for his roles in classic sitcoms, has died at the age of 91. His agent confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday, July 15, at his home in Rancho Mirage, California.
A Career in Comedy and Television
Williams made a name for himself in sitcoms such as 227 and Sanford and Son, and also appeared in popular programmes like Parks and Recreation, Tales from the Crypt, and Magnum, P.I. Before pursuing acting, he worked as a corrections officer and a social worker. It was during his divorce from his first wife, Gay Anderson, in 1976 that he decided to take the plunge and move to Hollywood.
Family and Personal Life
Williams shared three children with his first wife. He later married Renee Himes, but the couple divorced by 1984. Despite personal challenges, he built a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.
Tributes from Co-Stars
Following the news of his passing, tributes flooded in from fellow actors. Judy Norton, his co-star, wrote on Instagram: “Heartbroken to hear the news of Hal Williams’ passing. It was a joy to know him. I had the chance to do a three-part interview with him a couple of years ago. ‘Good night, Hal’.”
Regina King, who played his on-screen daughter Brenda Jenkins in 227, posted a moving tribute: “I’m saddened by the passing of my TV dad, Hal Williams, but so grateful for the many years, memories and special moments we shared. He lived 91 full years, and I feel incredibly fortunate that some of those years were shared with me. From the time I was young, he gave me a sense of safety that extended far beyond the work we did together. On a set where there could be so much noise, gossip and politicking, he sheltered me from much of it. He created a space where I could simply be young, feel cared for and do my work. Because my parents were divorced and my own father wasn’t always available, I was able to share moments with him that meant more to me than he may ever have known. I will always treasure the gentleness, steadiness and love he brought into my life. I’m especially grateful that we were able to spend time together this past Christmas. You never know when the last time you’ll see someone in this life will be, and I will hold that time close to my heart. Thank you for being such a beautiful part of my life. This is not goodbye. It’s see you later. I love you. Live in peace, Dad.”
Fan Reactions
Fans also shared their condolences on social media. One wrote on X: “Rest in Peace to the great TV dad Hal Williams. Just lost my own great dad last month.” Another echoed: “I’ve been watching the re-runs [of 227]. Hal Williams was 100%! The hardworking family man, knowing father, understanding husband and good neighbour. Respect and love. Rest in Heaven Mr. Hal Williams.”
