A golden retriever named Lucie has captured the internet's attention with her unusual vocalization—she 'moos' instead of barking. The nine-year-old dog has been making the distinctive sound since she was a puppy, and her owner, Cara Ovens, 36, from West Lothian, Scotland, says the habit has only grown stronger over the years.
How Lucie's Unique 'Moo' Began
Ovens was 'shocked' when Lucie first made the noise at around ten weeks old. 'It started very early, and it was a bit of a shock,' she said. 'It just got more enthusiastic as the years went on, and here we are, nine years later, and she's louder than ever.' Despite her unique sound, Lucie is in perfect health and can also produce a typical bark, but Ovens believes the reaction she gets from people encourages her to keep 'mooing.'
Viral Fame on Social Media
Ovens began sharing clips of Lucie on Instagram under the handle @luciewoos in 2020, but it wasn't until April 2025 that a video of Lucie running down the stairs while 'mooing' went viral. 'That video went way more viral than I could ever have thought,' Ovens said. Since then, Lucie has amassed nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram, with fans charmed by her peculiar bark. Commenters have even suggested consulting a pet psychic to understand the reason behind the mooing.
A Joyful Communication Method
Ovens describes Lucie's 'moo' as a form of communication, with different tones and volumes. While it sometimes sounds like a cow, she says it more often resembles a human saying 'woo.' In one popular clip, Lucie 'moos' at a group of cows, who moo back in surprise. Ovens notes that most comments ask if Lucie also barks—which she does—and that the videos bring joy to viewers. 'She makes me laugh out loud, without fail, every single day. If we can spread that joy a little bit further, that's the goal,' Ovens added.
