George Clooney and Donald Trump: From Friends to Foes

George Clooney and Donald Trump have traded insults for years, with their relationship deteriorating further after the actor accused the US president of a 'war crime' over his remarks on Iran. Clooney, 64, recently criticised Trump's warning to Iran, prompting the president to hit back by mocking his acting career.

The pair were once on good terms. Clooney told Variety last year that he 'knew [Trump] very well' before he entered politics, describing him as a 'big goofball' who would call frequently and even tried to help him see a back surgeon. However, Clooney said that changed when Trump entered politics.

Trump responded on Truth Social by calling Clooney a 'failed movie star' and referencing his wife, Amal Clooney, and their recent acquisition of French citizenship. He wrote that Clooney got 'more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies.'

The animosity dates back to at least 2016, when Clooney called Trump an 'opportunist' and a 'xenophobic fascist'. In 2017, he said Trump was 'in over his head and incapable' of being president. In July 2024, Clooney publicly called for Joe Biden to step aside from the presidential race, drawing further attacks from Trump.

The latest clash occurred after Clooney accused Trump of threatening war crimes. Trump had posted on Truth Social that 'a whole civilization will die' if Iran retaliated against US actions. Clooney condemned the statement, leading to Trump's latest insults.
