Gary Numan's wife, Gemma, has been hospitalised as she prepares for major surgery. The 57-year-old shared a photo from her hospital bed on Instagram, revealing she had undergone a spinal procedure to manage years of 'agonising pain', migraines, and a mini stroke.
Gemma, who married the synth-pop star in 1997, explained that the treatment was intended to provide temporary relief until she can undergo more extensive surgery. She wrote: 'Just had my spine procedure in London again like last year - it gave me eight month's relief. Then the neck pain and migraines came screaming back. So I've come again to hope to get me through the next few months until I absolutely have to have five cervical discs removed and replaced ASAP after the Gary Numan tour.'
The procedure targets specific areas of the spine to ease nerve compression and inflammation, offering temporary pain relief. Gemma also detailed additional health issues, including nutcracker syndrome, a vascular disorder diagnosed earlier this year after 'two years of weird harsh pains'. She will undergo a kidney autotransplantation in Los Angeles, a rare surgery to reposition her own kidney.
She also revealed diagnoses of May-Thurner syndrome and pelvic congestion syndrome, noting that May-Thurner may have caused a clot leading to a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) she suffered last year. 'I’m a broken nightmare,' she admitted, 'Hopefully getting fixed!'
Singer Shirley Manson of Garbage responded with support, saying: 'Dear GOD Gemma, I'm so sorry darling. What a lot to deal with. It totally sucks BUM. Feel better. You deserve a life free of pain. Sending love love love.'
