Rio Ferdinand has made a dramatic U-turn on Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United, now suggesting the forward could resurrect his career at Old Trafford after a successful loan spell at Barcelona.
Ferdinand's Change of Heart
More than a year after declaring Rashford's United career finished, Ferdinand now believes the England international has matured during his time away from the club. The former United defender had previously stated there was no way back for Rashford after then-manager Ruben Amorim publicly criticized his effort and application.
However, after Rashford rounded off England's 4-2 World Cup group stage win over Croatia, Ferdinand shifted his stance significantly. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: "Manchester United might have to reevaluate Marcus Rashford's situation. It seems like he has matured; the time away from the club may have done him the good that he needed, and it has cleansed both parties. Is it time to shake hands and come back?"
Rashford's Loan Spell
Rashford spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona for the entire 2025/26 campaign. Despite hitting double figures for goals and assists, Barcelona allowed their option for a permanent £26 million move to expire after signing Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer.
Ferdinand argued that the season under Hansi Flick at Barcelona helped Rashford understand his responsibilities better. "He was given a role at Barcelona, told he would be an impact player at times, to come on and change games. At England, that is his role, and that's a huge asset to the squad in this competition," Ferdinand added.
Previous Criticism
In January 2025, Ferdinand had been scathing in his assessment of Rashford's situation after Amorim's public criticism. "If I was the player the manager said that about, my heart, my pride, my ego - it's embarrassment," Ferdinand said at the time. "For someone to question your application, to question you giving 100 per cent for the team, saying you're lacking effort and taking shortcuts, that's a damning comment. There's no way back for Marcus after that."
Now, Ferdinand appears to believe that circumstances have changed, and Rashford's performances for England and Barcelona have proven his value. Rashford has now scored in back-to-back World Cups, having netted three times in Qatar 2022, and will be pushing for a starting berth against Ghana in England's second fixture.
