Euphoria Star Chloe Cherry Earns Crew Applause for Graphic Season 3 Scene

The highly anticipated third season of HBO's acclaimed drama series Euphoria has premiered, bringing back fan favourites like Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Zendaya. However, the show's darker narrative direction has sparked a mixed reaction, with actress Chloe Cherry receiving praise from the production team while facing criticism from viewers.

Intense Drug Smuggling Scene Draws Crew Admiration

Chloe Cherry, who portrays heroin addict Faye in a principal role this season, recently revealed that the entire crew applauded her after filming a particularly distressing scene. In this sequence, Faye and Zendaya's character Rue are compelled to assist their drug dealer by swallowing small bags of a white powder substance to smuggle them across the American border.

The scene depicts both characters gagging and occasionally vomiting as they struggle to ingest the bags, with Cherry recalling that director Sam Levinson specifically instructed her to amplify the disgust factor. "Sam came up to me and said, 'I need this scene to really show how disgusting it would actually be if you were to swallow balloons filled with fentanyl,'" Cherry told Metro. "He was like, 'I really need you to turn the disgust up in this scene,' and I was like, all right, I'm gonna give it a go."

Cherry's commitment to the raw and unsettling performance left the crew in awe. "When we stopped shooting, everybody clapped. I'm not even kidding, the whole crew clapped for me," she said. "They were so amazed at how disgusting I made that scene."

Fans Express Disappointment Over Show's Dark Direction

Despite the crew's admiration, many Euphoria supporters have voiced their dissatisfaction with the show's increasingly grim and graphic content. Viewers took to social media platform X to express their concerns, with some labelling the scene as excessively nasty and questioning the show's creative direction.

One fan commented, "At what point did Euphoria go from Euphoria to Breaking Bad?" while another added, "I don't know if I'm watching an episode of Euphoria or of Narcos." A third viewer simply posted, "This nasty as hell omg," reflecting a broader sentiment that the series has become overly dark.

This drug smuggling sequence was not the only moment in the season premiere to attract criticism. Later in the episode, Sydney Sweeney's character Cassie engages in a controversial online money-making scheme, donning a brown corset, puppy ears, a collar, and lead, while pretending to be a canine and even lapping water from a bowl. Fans described this as a "humiliation ritual," further highlighting their discomfort with the season's tone.

Season 3 Availability and Ongoing Debate

The premiere episode of Euphoria Season 3 is now available for streaming on HBO Max, Sky Atlantic, and NOW. As the season unfolds, the divergence between the production team's appreciation for intense, realistic portrayals and fan reactions to the show's dark evolution continues to fuel debate. While Chloe Cherry's performance has been celebrated internally, the audience's response underscores a growing concern about whether the series is pushing boundaries too far, potentially alienating its core viewership.
