Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed that she moved to the UK because of Donald Trump's re-election, stating that 'everything here is just better'. Speaking at a conversation event at Cheltenham's Everyman theatre on Sunday, the comedian said she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, arrived in the UK the day before the 2024 US election and decided to stay after Trump's victory.
DeGeneres, who ended her long-running talkshow in 2022, described the UK as 'clean' and praised the treatment of animals and the politeness of people. She also expressed concerns over LGBTQ+ rights in the US, hinting that she and de Rossi may remarry in the UK if same-sex marriage is overturned. 'The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,' she said, referencing a June vote by southern Baptists to endorse a resolution seeking to overturn same-sex marriage.
The comedian also addressed the toxic work environment scandal that marred the end of her talkshow, saying she was misconstrued as 'mean' due to her directness. 'I'm a direct person, and I'm very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that ... I'm mean?' she said, adding that it was 'certainly an unpleasant way to end' the show.
