Downton Abbey Fans Hail 'Masterpiece' BBC Drama North & South

Fans of period dramas are hailing the BBC's North & South as a 'masterpiece,' praising its authentic performances, political storylines, and enchanting Victorian romance. The series is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

A Classic Victorian Adaptation

North & South is a British BBC production adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's Victorian novel, set against the backdrop of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The series is renowned for its striking depiction of social and class divides in 1850s England, offering a compelling historical atmosphere.

One fan on IMDb wrote: "I'm a history teacher, so I'm very critical of adaptations, especially those that sentimentalise the past. This is a superb rendering of the spirit of the industrial age and the many facets of class struggle within it. It's also a richly romantic love story. The acting by all the cast is uniformly excellent, but Richard Armitage as Thornton is a standout."

Plot and Characters

The story follows Margaret Hale, played by Daniela Denby-Ashe, who is forced to relocate from southern England to the industrial North after her father's death. She struggles to adapt to the stark contrasts of industrial life, especially when she meets the Thornton family, cotton mill owners who disdain her southern ways. Over time, her empathy and affection grow for John Thornton, portrayed by Richard Armitage.

Another fan posted: "North and South took me completely by surprise... Elizabeth Gaskell's work is far more than a mere period romance. This is social commentary and a love story, the struggle of workers and masters, as well as the misunderstanding of intellectuals that forms a triangle still alive today."

Critical Acclaim and Surprise Success

Viewers have heaped praise on the performances, with one stating: "The acting is superb - the lead characters John and Hannah Thornton, Margaret Hale, and union man Nicholas Higgins are so natural that you forget you are watching a movie. The supporting characters are also strong, making this an unexpected gem."

When originally broadcast, the BBC had low expectations and provided little publicity, but the series quickly gained momentum. Many credit this to Richard Armitage, then a relatively unknown actor, who drew comparisons to Colin Firth's portrayal in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

North & South is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
