Davina McCall's Awkward Fan Photo Request Reveals Celebrity Mix-Up

Long Lost Family presenter Davina McCall has shared a mortifying yet hilarious incident where she was mistaken for fellow TV star Claudia Winkleman. The 58-year-old broadcaster, known for her decades-long career including Big Brother and The Masked Singer, described the awkward encounter during a recent outing.

The Confusing Hotel Encounter

Speaking to Bella magazine, McCall recounted being outside a hotel chatting with a doorman when two girls approached excitedly. "I was outside a hotel the other night having a lovely chat with the doorman, and two girls walked past and they went, 'Oh my gosh, it's you!'" she explained. Initially flattered, McCall responded cheerfully, only for the situation to take an embarrassing turn.

"One of them asked for a photo and her friend looked a bit confused," McCall continued. "The girl then whispered in my ear, 'She doesn't know who you are,' and then said, 'My mum loves The Traitors'. I'll tell you what I should do on the night, I should come dressed as Claudia Winkleman."

A Recurring Celebrity Confusion

McCall went on to reveal that this mix-up happens frequently between her and Winkleman, with both presenters finding the situation amusing. "It happens to Claudia all the time as well," she joked, adding that thankfully both television personalities consider these mistaken identity moments "hilarious" rather than offensive.

This isn't the first time the two presenters have been confused. In 2024, Winkleman shared an Instagram story where a fan appeared to mistake her for McCall while filming Channel 4's The Piano. The fan wrote: "Of course I randomly bumped into Davina McCall." Seeing the funny side, Winkleman responded: "I love you @davinamccall."

McCall's Career Highlights and Comic Relief Plans

Davina McCall began her television career on MTV Europe before gaining prominence hosting Channel 4's Streetmate in 1998. She became a household name in 2000 when she took over presenting duties on Big Brother, which at its peak attracted audiences of up to 13 million viewers. Since then, she has presented numerous shows including Long Lost Family, The Jump, and served as a judge on The Masked Singer.

Looking ahead, McCall joked that she might need to revive her famous Big Brother catchphrase "please do not swear" when she hosts Comic Relief: Funny For Money alongside Catherine Tate's character "Nan" on Friday, March 20. "I am mildly terrified of Nan, if I'm honest," she admitted. "How I'm going to stop her from swearing, I just don't know. Obviously, 'please do not swear' was my catchphrase – so I'm going to have to stay on my toes."

The Comic Relief special will feature comedians Katherine Ryan, Nick Mohammed, and Joel Dommett presenting an evening of live performances, sketches, and celebrity cameos. The lineup includes Romesh Ranganathan hosting Comic Relief's version of The Weakest Link, along with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary starring in a bank heist sketch.

The fundraising campaign will see numerous celebrities "do something funny for money," including Radio 1 presenter Greg James undertaking a challenging 1,000km tandem cycle across the United Kingdom. James will depart from Weymouth on Friday before spending eight consecutive days cycling to Edinburgh to raise funds for the charity.
