The hit BBC drama Time returns for a third series, this time set in a young offender institution (YOI). David Tennant, Jo Joyner, and Siobhan Finneran lead the new cast, bringing to life the harsh realities of the UK prison system and the impact of locking up teenagers on them and their families.

David Tennant Plays a Prison Officer in Crisis

Award-winning actor David Tennant, known for Doctor Who and Rivals, joins the series as veteran prison officer Bobby Bailey, a custodial manager at a YOI. In first-look images, Tennant is seen searching teenage offender James (Louis McCartney), who has been incarcerated for an unforgivable act of violence. Bailey is in the midst of a personal crisis, battling guilt after a tragedy at the prison—a situation that brings him into conflict with prison chaplain Marie-Louise O'Dell.

Siobhan Finneran Returns as a Faith-Shaken Chaplain

Siobhan Finneran, star of Happy Valley, reprises her role as chaplain Marie-Louise O'Dell, who previously served as a spiritual anchor in a women's prison during series two. In the new series, O'Dell arrives at the YOI having lost her faith. She is seen staring tensely behind bars and engaging in deep conversation with Bailey.

Jo Joyner and Vinette Robinson Join the Cast

Soap star Jo Joyner, best known for EastEnders, plays Nicola, a character whose details remain largely under wraps. In preview images, she sports a slick-back hairstyle, hoodie, and hoop earrings. Actress Vinette Robinson (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Boiling Point) portrays Erica, seen wearing a white robe as she stares tensely at her reflection in a mirror.

Young Offenders Face First Weeks of Incarceration

The new series follows young offenders James and Peter (Ollie McNulty) as they struggle through their first weeks and months of incarceration. Peter grapples with whether family loyalty outweighs telling the truth about the death of an innocent man; he is seen holding his YOI uniform as he enters the facility. James is shown sitting in a cell, while Christopher (Chukwubuikem Molokwu) looks tense as he walks through the institution, followed by officer Bailey and chaplain O'Dell.

Behind the Series

Written by Jimmy McGovern and Samuel Bailey, the upcoming series consists of three 60-minute episodes. Time will be available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year, with further details yet to be announced.
