Cunha Welcomes Man Utd New Signing Ederson to Brazil World Cup Squad
Cunha Welcomes Ederson to Brazil Squad After Man Utd Deal

Matheus Cunha was the first Brazil player to welcome Ederson to the national team's training camp in New Jersey, following the midfielder's late call-up to the World Cup squad. Ederson was not originally included in Carlo Ancelotti's initial 26-man selection for the tournament but was added after defender Wesley suffered an injury.

Manchester United Transfer Agreement

Manchester United had already reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson for £35 million, with an additional £4 million in potential add-ons, before he was drafted into Brazil's squad. The 26-year-old is set to join Cunha at Old Trafford next season, and the winger was quick to welcome his future club teammate to the national team setup.

Cunha shared an embrace with Ederson upon the latter's arrival on Monday, before the rest of the squad—including Arsenal defender Gabriel, Flamengo midfielder Lucas Paqueta, and Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes—greeted him.

Transfer Timeline

United had aimed to complete Ederson's transfer by the start of July to ensure his participation in pre-season training. However, his late inclusion in Brazil's World Cup squad is likely to delay the official announcement. It is not impossible for the transfer to be finalized during the World Cup in the United States, but that would require the approval of both the player and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The more probable scenario is that Ederson will undergo a medical and complete the necessary paperwork after Brazil's World Cup campaign ends, before being granted a summer break.

Player Profile

Ederson began his career in Brazil before moving to Italian club Salernitana in 2022. After six months, he signed for Atalanta, where he has made 180 appearances. In the 2023/24 season, he won the Europa League with Atalanta, starting in the final as the Italian side defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.

The versatile midfielder can play as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box-to-box No.8, and has built a reputation in Italy for his exceptional running power, averaging 10.6 kilometers per game in the Champions League this season.
