Coronation Street star Amanda Barrie has shared a heartfelt tribute to her former Celebrity Big Brother housemate Ann Widdecombe, who died at the age of 78 on July 10, 2026. Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Barrie confessed she had been meaning to call Widdecombe before her death, urging viewers not to delay reaching out to loved ones.
Amanda Barrie's Tribute to Ann Widdecombe
Barrie, known for her role on Coronation Street, described their unexpected bond despite stark differences in politics and beliefs. “We could not be more diametrically opposed on gay rights, on politics, on Brexit, on everything,” she said. “We really were completely different, miles apart, and yet we actually bonded and I found her to be… that big bulldog frontage and inside was a really kind person.”
Their friendship formed during the 2018 series of Celebrity Big Brother, where Widdecombe finished as runner-up to Courtney Act. Barrie recalled lighthearted moments, including pranking Widdecombe in the dormitory. “We used to frighten her in the dormitory, I used to say, ‘let’s all go and give Ann a goodnight kiss,’ and she would scream!” she said.
Ann Widdecombe's Legacy and Final Years
Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister and later Reform UK spokeswoman, was remembered for her strong Christian values and commitment to public service. A statement from her agents noted she “loved the cut and thrust of political debate” and was “still actively campaigning for Reform UK” after leaving Parliament 16 years ago. She also gained fame for her “unforgettable” appearances on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where she reached the semi-finals with partner Anton Du Beke, defying judges with the public's support.
Barrie reflected on their ability to maintain friendship despite differences, saying, “I think there wouldn’t be any wars if people behaved more like that.” She added, “I can’t think of anyone who would be more cross than Ann to think that she’s not here. She would be really cross because that little head and all her knowledge and everything else, there was a lot of goodness in Ann and I stand by that.”
A Sad Confession and Call to Action
Concluding her interview, Barrie made a poignant confession: “I really was fond of her, and may I just say to anybody today, I’d been meaning to ring her up and that happened to somebody else. So anybody today who has got anybody, don’t not ring them up, just pick up the phone today.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
