Christopher Biggins has opened up about his financial struggles and career resurgence following the death of his nephew, which plunged him into deep depression. The actor, best known for winning 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' in 2007, revealed that his nephew's passing was a devastating blow that left him in a state of profound sadness.
Biggins, 62, recalled his earlier financial missteps, including filing for voluntary bankruptcy in the 1980s after his stint on 'Surprise, Surprise' with Cilla Black. He admitted to overspending after the show ended, leading to a period of financial hardship. 'I filed for voluntary bankruptcy, which was very good for me because I was only allowed one credit card,' he said.
The actor credited his recovery to the support of friends and a good relationship, as well as the guidance of his accountant. He managed to exit bankruptcy within a year and later experienced a career boost after winning 'I'm a Celebrity...'. The show opened up new opportunities, including lucrative pantomime roles, and helped him handle success more wisely.
Biggins advised young actors to be cautious with money, noting that actors are notoriously bad at managing finances. 'Get yourself a very, very good accountant,' he urged, reflecting on his own lessons learned.
