Two full decades have passed since Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards finalised their divorce, yet the actor admits he still struggles to move past the turbulent nature of their separation. The 60-year-old star, currently on a promotional tour for his memoir, revisited the painful memories during a recent event in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Book Tour Revelations and Prenup Advice
While speaking to an audience at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on November 8, Sheen candidly discussed his past marital breakdowns. He pointedly described his divorces from Richards, now 54, and his third wife, Brooke Mueller, 48, as particularly difficult. The experience has led him to offer some blunt counsel, urging a young fan to secure a prenuptial agreement before marrying.
According to an account from a Daily Mail reporter present at the 'Charlie Sheen: Alive On Stage' event, a 23-year-old attendee directly asked the actor for guidance. Sheen's response was unequivocal: 'If you can, yeah.' He acknowledged that such a suggestion often meets resistance, but added a modern twist, noting, 'Maybe she needs you to sign one. Maybe it goes both ways.'
The Two and a Half Men Years: A Personal Toll
The conversation also turned to his time on the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, where Sheen starred from 2003 until his very public firing in 2011. He recalled many positive memories from the show's successful early years, but indicated that overwhelming personal issues eventually seeped into his professional life.
'I just got really overloaded,' Sheen confessed to the crowd. 'It really wasn't so much about what was going on at the job. It was all the personal s**t that it was nearly impossible not to bring with me to work.' He directly linked this period of turmoil to his personal life, stating, 'I had four children during those eight years and went through two really messy divorces, you know. And pricey!'
It has been widely reported that the actor did not have a prenuptial agreement with Richards during their marriage from 2002 to 2006, a financial detail that likely contributed to the 'pricey' nature of their split. He did, however, have one in place for his subsequent marriage to Mueller, which lasted from 2008 to 2011.
Family, Sobriety, and Strained Relationships
Now a father of five, Sheen spoke earnestly about his motivation for maintaining his sobriety for the past eight years. He credited his children as his primary reason for staying clean. 'I got all these kids and they're counting on me,' he said, emphasising his commitment to being a reliable and present father.
Despite this stated dedication, his relationship with his 21-year-old daughter, Sami Sheen, whom he shares with Richards, is known to be strained. It was revealed earlier this year that Sami had not spoken to her father for several months and had blocked him after a heated exchange. Sheen has previously addressed the estrangement, expressing confidence that they would 'fix it.'
In a surprising turn, Sheen and Richards appeared to have reconciled, at least publicly, when she attended the Los Angeles premiere of his Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, on September 4. Richards even shared a supportive message on social media, calling Sheen's journey one with 'so many ups and downs' and stating she was 'truly honored he asked me to be part of his story.'
However, a light-hearted public disagreement recently surfaced when Sheen claimed Richards once cashed a million-dollar cheque he wrote as a joke. Richards promptly posted a photo of the uncashed cheque on her Instagram story, captioning it, 'Found this during my recent move. I never cashed it, @charliesheen. Is it still good?!'
The event also featured a surprise appearance from Sheen's ex-girlfriend from the 1980s, Dolly Fox, who asked him a question from the audience. Throughout the evening, the actor, who vaped on stage, was open about his life, reflecting on his three marriages and his current focus on family and sobriety.
