Brenda Edwards Tearfully Recalls Son Jamal's Death on Loose Women
Brenda Edwards Tears Up Over Son Jamal on Loose Women

Brenda Edwards was overcome with emotion during a poignant discussion about grief on Monday's episode of ITV's Loose Women, breaking down in tears as she reflected on the death of her son Jamal. The 56-year-old singer and presenter, who tragically lost her son in February 2022 when he passed away aged 31, received immediate comfort from her fellow panelists Kaye Adams, Sue Cleaver, and Nadia Sawalha during the heartfelt segment.

An Emotional Moment on Live Television

During the programme, which focused on the topic of bereavement, Brenda spoke about finding solace in memories of her son. 'I find it so comforting to hear stories about Jamal all the time,' she shared. 'I love it and I get messages from people and it's really comforting. But there's such a wave. It seems like 20 hours out of a 24 hour day, I'm just in a...' At this point, Brenda became visibly distressed and began to cry, prompting her co-stars to offer supportive words and physical comfort.

Viewer Reactions and Support

The emotional moment resonated deeply with the audience, who took to social media to express their sympathy and support for Brenda. One viewer wrote: 'I love Brenda Edwards, bless her for getting upset today on Loose Women. Sending my love. xx.' Another added: '@loosewomen Lots of love & hugs to Brenda Edwards.' A third shared: 'My heart aches for Brenda.' While a fourth commented: 'I don’t believe there is a greater grief than losing your child, no matter the circumstances. I don’t think you ever recover from that.'

The Tragic Loss of Jamal Edwards

Jamal Edwards, a respected DJ and music entrepreneur who founded the influential platform SB.TV that helped launch Ed Sheeran's career, died from a cardiac arrest brought on by cocaine and alcohol in February 2022. Brenda has spoken openly about her grief journey on multiple occasions, including during a previous appearance on Loose Women where she discussed her approach to coping with profound loss.

Brenda's Toolkit for Coping with Grief

Last year, Brenda moved her fellow panelists when she described her metaphorical 'tool kit' for navigating life's challenges following bereavement. 'I like to say the keep calm and carry on T-shirt is permanently with me,' she told Charlene White, Linda Robson, and Gloria Hunniford. 'Obviously everybody knows everything that I've been through, but it's like you need a tool kit.' She elaborated with vivid imagery: 'You might have a ladder because you've got the ups and the downs, you might have a hammer because it just bashes you sometimes. And I like a spirit level to keep me on the straight line and you've got to have some glue to try and put yourself back together after it.'

The Pain of Social Media Intrusion

In a particularly raw revelation during an appearance on Ashley Cain's MTV show Faces in 2023, Brenda described the 'gut-wrenching' moment of being with Jamal when he passed away. She also expressed enduring anger about how news of his death spread on social media within hours, before she could make an official announcement. 'The one thing I didn't like was the announcement of him passing was taken away from me,' Brenda explained. 'I think people should have just had that respect for him and for me. That's nobody else's business, when I want to say whatever I want to say, then I should be able and I have the right to be announcing that. But that was taken out of my hands.'

Finding Strength in Legacy

Despite her ongoing grief, Brenda finds purpose in preserving Jamal's legacy. 'It gives me strength to remember, and it gives me strength to have a legacy to keep working on,' she shared. 'My family are so supportive and that means everything to me. Keep calm, keep smiling and carry on.' She has been clear, however, that she is not 'moving on' from her loss, but rather learning to live with it while honouring her son's memory through continued work and remembrance.

Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV1 from 12:30pm and is available to stream on ITVX.
