Adam Boulton's Ann Widdecombe 'Mistake' Sparks Ofcom Complaints Against Sky News
Boulton's Widdecombe Comments Trigger Ofcom Complaints

Former Sky News presenter Adam Boulton has been hit with 169 complaints to Ofcom after calling the late Ann Widdecombe a "spinster" and an "old maid" during a live broadcast on Monday, July 13. The remarks were made shortly after the death of the former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokesperson, who was found dead at her Devon home at age 78, with her death being treated as murder.

Boulton's Remarks and Apology

During the segment, Boulton referred to Widdecombe as a "spinster" and an "old maid," adding: "Reportedly, she claimed that she was a virgin." Following backlash, Boulton issued an apology on air, describing himself as a freelance contributor and stating he was "freely" offering the apology after admitting "I got this badly wrong." He also expressed remorse to Sky News and Times Radio for the "unwarranted" criticism both outlets faced as a result of his "mistake."

Tributes to Ann Widdecombe

Ann Widdecombe, known for her later TV appearances including on Strictly Come Dancing, served as a Conservative MP and later as a Reform UK spokesperson. Her management announced her death with a statement: “It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, DSG. We send our deepest condolences to Ann’s family and friends. We ask that the family’s wish not to be contacted at this sad time is respected.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood paid tribute on X, writing: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe. The circumstances of her death are extremely distressing and my thoughts are with Ann's family and loved ones. Ann's dedication to public service was decades long, and she was a true servant of her constituents." She added that she had spoken to the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police and urged the public to avoid speculation.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch described Widdecombe as "a very fun and feisty person, who spoke her mind" and expressed shock at the attack. "She was 78 years old, she was an elderly woman, I don't understand how someone could do something so horrific to an elderly person. It was a nasty, horrific attack and my heart is breaking for her family." Badenoch extended condolences to Nigel Farage and Reform UK, noting that both parties had lost a friend.

Ofcom Investigation

The 169 complaints to Ofcom trigger a potential investigation into whether Boulton's comments breached broadcasting standards. Sky News has not yet issued a statement regarding the complaints. Reach previously approached Boulton's representatives for comment.
