Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75: A Look Back at Her Unique Career
Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer known for her husky voice and 80s power ballads, has died at the age of 75. Her career was marked by two distinct bursts of global success that seemed almost unrelated, save for the name on the records.
Early Hits and Vocal Transformation
Her first major British hits were 1976's 'Lost in France' and 1977's 'It's a Heartache'. The latter sold 6 million copies and reached the Top 3 on the US country chart. Between these releases, Tyler underwent surgery to remove nodules on her vocal cords, which transformed her sweet tone into a striking huskiness reminiscent of Rod Stewart.
Despite the success of 'It's a Heartache', her record label struggled to define her direction, experimenting with covers of Tom Petty, easy listening versions, and disco tracks like '(The World is Full of) Married Men'. None of these efforts sustained her early momentum.
Collaboration with Jim Steinman
Tyler took control of her career, approaching producer Jim Steinman at a time when his relationship with Meat Loaf was strained. Steinman, eager to prove himself after two flops, created grandiloquent tracks for Tyler. Their collaboration produced 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', a seven-minute epic featuring a pipe organ solo, nuclear bomb sound effects, and a vocal performance that made Tyler the star amidst the chaos. The song went platinum in nine countries, hit No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic, and propelled her album 'Faster Than the Speed of Night' to sales of 3 million. In 2026, it surpassed a billion streams on Spotify.
Continued Success and Later Career
Her follow-up hit 'Holding Out for a Hero', from the 'Footloose' soundtrack, was another Steinman extravaganza. However, their partnership waned as Steinman's career revived. Tyler's later albums, including 'Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire' and 'Hide Your Heart', saw her unlucky not to achieve a resurgence, with 'The Best' becoming a signature song for Tina Turner after Tyler's version underperformed. She continued to score platinum albums in Europe into the 90s and remained a touring artist. Her later work included collaborations with David Guetta, rerecording 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' for his 2025 single 'Together'.
