Blue Star Duncan James Reveals Heartbreaking Father Story

Pop singer Duncan James has shared the tragic story of his lost relationship with his late father, whom he never met in person and only spoke to once during a brief phone conversation. The Blue member, who rose to fame in the early 2000s with the chart-topping boyband, has opened up about pivotal moments that shaped his life in a candid new interview, reflecting on the emotional impact of growing up without a father figure.

A Single Phone Call and Shattered Hopes

James told the i Paper that his father left his mother, who worked as a nurse, before he was born, leaving her to raise him as a single parent. The singer explained that he first made contact with his father when he was twenty-five years old, initiating what would become their only conversation.

"I never met my dad," James wrote. "I got in contact when I was 25 and had one conversation on the phone, and told him I was in Blue. He had this deep, well-spoken voice, and said: 'Which one are you?'"

James recalled his immediate reaction during that fateful call: "I thought: 'I'm not the Black guy [Simon Webbe]. I'm not the Greek-looking one [Antony Costa]. Can't you tell?' He said: 'I suppose I could arrange to meet you for a drink.' I thought: 'That's nice that you could arrange to meet me,' but said: 'I'd like to have a beer with you, talk about your life. I'm an open-minded guy, I'm not judging. I just want to sit and look you in the eyes.'"

Tabloid Betrayal and Emotional Fallout

Just one week after that hopeful conversation, James received devastating news from his publicist. A tabloid newspaper was preparing to run a double-page spread featuring "a man who claims he's your long-lost father."

His father had apparently told the publication that James had inherited all his talent from him. The revelation caused immediate emotional turmoil within James's family.

"My mum burst into tears, she was so upset he'd sold out on me in such a callous way," James revealed. "I thought: 'I don't want to meet him now.'"

A Tragic Discovery and Lingering Guilt

Ten years later, James reached out to his father's former partner and learned the heartbreaking truth about his father's fate. His father had been found dead in his home in Portugal by the housekeeper, reportedly "surrounded by bottles."

The news brought complex emotions to the surface for James, who had never reconciled with his father.

"I no longer had the power to say: 'I will meet you when the time's right,'" James explained. "But I felt a lot of guilt, and didn't understand why I was crying over a man I'd never met. The symbolism hit me, which is why I've probably got daddy issues to this day."

Blue's Success and Personal Journey

With Blue, James achieved remarkable success, including hit singles like "All Rise" and "One Love." The singer publicly came out as bisexual in 2009 before identifying as gay in 2014. He shares a twenty-year-old daughter, Tania-Finn, with model Claire Grainger.

During a 2022 appearance on Rylan Clark's podcast Ry-Union, James discussed the challenges he faced in being open about his sexuality while in the public eye.

"I think being in such a public boy band, with the majority of fans being female, it was really hard for me to actually have the courage to come out," he admitted. "Because I was scared on so many different levels on so many different things."

Blue recently released their new album Reflections last month and are scheduled to tour across the UK and Europe this year, continuing their musical journey while James processes these deeply personal revelations about his family history.
