The BBC has been compelled to issue a public statement after a decision by its music curation team sparked a major backlash from fans of global superstar Hozier.
The controversy erupted when the Irish singer-songwriter, famed for his mega-hit 'Take Me To Church', was noticeably absent from the 'BBC Introducing' playlist. The platform is designed to showcase breakthrough and emerging artists, a title many fans argued the artist still holds despite his international success.
Outraged supporters swiftly took to social media to voice their displeasure, flooding platforms with criticism directed at the broadcaster's music selection process. The wave of online discontent quickly gained momentum, forcing the corporation to address the growing furore directly.
In its response, a BBC spokesperson clarified the purpose of the 'BBC Introducing' initiative. The statement emphasised that the platform's core mission is to provide a "first step" for brand-new, unsigned, and undiscovered talent, giving them their first national radio exposure.
