Barry Keoghan Forced into Hiding by Relentless Online Abuse
The acclaimed Irish actor Barry Keoghan, known for his roles in Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin, has disclosed that he is effectively "hiding away" from public life due to escalating online harassment focused on his physical appearance. In a candid interview on SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up, the 33-year-old Oscar nominee described the situation as "becoming a problem" that is now impacting his professional ambitions and personal well-being.
Career and Personal Life Under Siege
Despite his rising star power, including a high-profile casting as Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopics, Keoghan admitted the "nasty side" of fame is causing him to reconsider his future in acting. "When that starts leaking into your art, it becomes a problem because then you don't even want to be on screen anymore," he explained, highlighting how the abuse is eroding his confidence and desire to perform.
The father of one has been particularly distressed by the inhumane commentary targeting not only his appearance but also his character and parenting abilities. He shared that the vitriol has extended to his family, with intrusive behavior such as people knocking on his grandmother's door and intimidating his ex-partner and their three-year-old son, Brando.
Social Media Withdrawal and Family Concerns
In response to the torrent of hate, Keoghan has deactivated his Instagram account and limited his online presence. He stated on X, "I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don't respond to." The actor emphasized that the abuse has crossed too many lines, distracting him from his family and work.
Keoghan voiced deep anxiety about the long-term effects on his young son, who will eventually encounter the malicious content. "It is disappointing for the fans, but it's also disappointing that my little boy has to read all of this stuff when he gets older," he said, underscoring his commitment to being a strong role model despite the challenges.
A Plea for Respect and Humanity
The actor concluded his public statements with a heartfelt appeal for decency, writing, "Please be respectful to all. Thank u x." His experience sheds light on the darker aspects of celebrity culture, where online platforms can become arenas for cruelty that force even successful individuals into isolation and self-doubt.
