Antiques Roadshow star Theo Burrell dies after brain cancer battle
Antiques Roadshow's Theo Burrell dies at 39 after brain cancer fight

Antiques Roadshow expert Theo Burrell has died at the age of 39 following a four-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her husband Alex announced her passing on Instagram on July 11, stating that she died "peacefully" surrounded by family.

Diagnosis and survival

Burrell, from East Lothian, Scotland, was first diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022. Doctors initially told her she would likely live only 12 to 18 months, but she defied the prognosis and survived for four years, long enough to see her son start school. She shared her journey on social media to inspire others facing similar diagnoses.

Tribute from her husband

In a heartfelt tribute, Alex wrote: "It is with great sadness that I share the news that Theo passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday afternoon. Neither she nor her medical team foresaw this happening quite so quickly." He added: "She was an incredible person who fought hard for her family, friends and raising awareness of this cruel disease. She saw life events like her son's first day at school and her wedding that a little over 4 years ago we thought she'd never see."

Support from cancer community

Alex also acknowledged the comfort and strength Burrell received from the cancer community: "The cancer community provided so much comfort and strength to her in her darkest moments. But most of all it provided hope and I think what she would want most of all is for other people to find hope in her story. Hope that the statistics aren't gospel and that one day they'll be very different."

Final defiant post

Just weeks before her death, Burrell posted a defiant message on Instagram telling cancer to "get lost." She admitted to experiencing many ups and downs but said she had found new determination after reaching the four-year mark.

Tributes from organisations and followers

Brain Tumour Research, of which Burrell became a patron in 2023, paid tribute: "We are heartbroken that we have lost the phenomenal, determined and truly inspiring Theo to this devastating disease. She constantly inspired us with how big her heart was and we will continue on our mission, driven by everything she taught us."

One follower wrote: "Heartbreaking news for the whole brain tumour community. An incredible individual with such passion for a shared cause." Another commented: "I am heartbroken for her family. Theo has been so inspiring and strong." Brain Tumour Support added: "Theo has been a support and inspiration to so many people and faced her own diagnosis with such courage."

Burrell is survived by her husband Alex, whom she married on March 28, 2026, and their son Jonah.
