Anita Rani's Fashion Week Transformation and Literary Commentary
Countryfile presenter Anita Rani showcased a striking style evolution during London Fashion Week, attending the prestigious Burberry show on Monday. The 48-year-old television star, known for her rural BBC programme, demonstrated her fashion credentials with a sophisticated grey trouser suit complemented by one of Burberry's iconic scarves draped elegantly over her shoulder.
Dual Fashion Statements
Earlier that same day, Anita had already made waves at the Raw Mango show, exchanging her familiar Countryfile tweed for a daring cream dress featuring a plunging neckline and black ruffled detailing. For the Burberry event at 1 Old Billingsgate Walk, she completed her chic ensemble with pointed patent heels that added height and a tan leather handbag, joining fellow celebrities including Iris Law and Marisa Abela in the front row.
This glamorous appearance follows Anita's recent public debut with new boyfriend Alex Lavery during last September's London Fashion Week, marking a new chapter in her personal life following the end of her 14-year marriage to technology executive Bhupinder Rehal in September 2023.
Controversial Literary Perspective
Beyond the fashion spotlight, Anita has recently voiced strong opinions regarding the casting for the new Wuthering Heights adaptation. She has criticised the selection of Australian actor Jacob Elordi to portray the tortured anti-hero Heathcliff, arguing that the character should not be played by a white actor.
The Celebrity Race Across The World star contends that Emily Brontë deliberately created Heathcliff as a non-white character in her 1847 gothic masterpiece. "At the time, Britain was at the height of colonial expansion," explains Yorkshire-born Rani. "This tiny island was getting very rich from doing some very dark things around the world."
Anita suggests that the Brontë sisters, being educated women who read newspapers and questioned Victorian morality, intentionally wrote Heathcliff as a character of colour to challenge conventions. She points to descriptions in the novel where Heathcliff is referred to as "dark-skinned" or having "gypsy in aspect" and "black eyes," though the text also mentions his face being "as white as the wall behind him" at one point.
Personal Reflections and New Beginnings
Director Emerald Fennell, who won an Oscar for Promising Young Woman, has described her Wuthering Heights adaptation as a personal interpretation based on how she imagined the novel as a teenager. Meanwhile, Anita continues to navigate her own personal narrative, having spoken openly about finding "freedom" following her divorce.
In a candid piece for The Sunday Times, the presenter admitted that divorce was considered a "cardinal sin" in her family background—she was raised in Bradford by an Indian-born Hindu father and Indian-born Sikh mother. Despite this, she has embraced what she calls "chapter two" of her life, telling Love Sunday Magazine: "Life is good, I'm in a good place. I'm focusing on myself and my own wants."
A source close to the couple previously revealed to The Mirror that Anita's separation from her husband resulted from their increasingly hectic schedules causing them to drift apart over time. The pair had met at a rave in east London and married in a Sikh ceremony in 2009 before parting ways last year.
Anita's Fashion Week appearances thus represent not merely a style transformation but a broader personal and professional evolution for the presenter, who continues to balance her Countryfile persona with fashion engagements, television projects, and increasingly vocal social commentary.
