Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana, breaching the terms of his probation connected to a serious car crash on a Dallas highway two years ago.
Details of the Sentencing
The Texas State Attorney's Office announced on Tuesday that Rice must immediately begin his jail term as part of the original sentence handed down last July. At that time, he pleaded guilty to third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.
Under the plea agreement, Rice received five years of deferred probation with 30 days in jail as a condition. The Chiefs declined to comment on the latest development, and messages to Rice's attorney were not returned.
Impact on NFL Offseason
The timing of the jail sentence coincides with the NFL's offseason workout phase. The 26-year-old receiver is likely to miss organized team activities and minicamp this spring.
On March 30, 2024, Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph (191 kph) when he made multiple aggressive maneuvers and struck other vehicles, according to prosecutors. After the crash on North Central Expressway, he failed to check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles and fled on foot.
Previous Statements and Career
During training camp before last season, Rice claimed he had completely changed and grown from the experience, which included a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. He said, "You have to learn from things like that. I've learned and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that."
Rice has played parts of three seasons, missing time due to the suspension and a knee injury. He helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the 2023 season.
