Andi Peters' Awkward Joke About Spending Amid ITV Budget Cuts
Andi Peters' Awkward Joke on GMB Amid ITV Budget Cuts

Good Morning Britain descended into an awkward moment on Monday when competition presenter Andi Peters made a joke about 'spending company money' while reporting from Lisbon, Portugal. The lighthearted quip came as ITV continues to implement significant budget cuts across its daytime programming, including job losses and schedule overhauls.

Awkward Exchange on Live TV

During the live broadcast, hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls connected with Peters, who was in Lisbon to promote the show's competition of the week. Peters gestured as if splashing cash, quipping about spending company funds. The remark visibly surprised Reid and Balls, who exchanged uncomfortable glances before steering the conversation back to the competition details. Peters later confirmed he would remain in the city for several days to explore its landmarks.

ITV's Daytime Restructuring

ITV has undergone major changes in recent months, starting with a sweeping schedule shake-up at the beginning of the year that affected all daytime programming, including soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Good Morning Britain, which previously operated under its own team alongside Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women, now falls under the production umbrella of ITN. The latter three shows share a unified production team, while the breakfast show has been transferred to ITN as part of cost-cutting measures.

Budget reductions have led to a slimmed-down workforce, resulting in job cuts both on and off camera. According to ITV's former Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Kevin Lygo, the changes aim to generate savings while maintaining viewer trust. 'Daytime is a really important part of what we do,' Lygo said last year when announcing the cuts. 'These scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust, as well as generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres.'

Schedule Overhaul Details

The restructuring includes reducing Lorraine and Loose Women to just 32 weeks per year. Good Morning Britain has been extended to run until 9:30 AM daily, effectively halving Lorraine's slot to a 30-minute show. This Morning airs from 10 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by Loose Women. An additional 30-minute extension for Good Morning Britain kicks in when Lorraine is off air during seasonal breaks.

Lygo acknowledged the impact on staff, stating: 'I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams, and we will work with ITV Studios and ITN as they manage these changes to produce the shows differently from next year, and support them through this transition. Daytime has been a core element of ITV's schedule for over 40 years and these changes will set ITV up to continue to bring viewers award-winning news, views and discussion as we enter our eighth decade.'

Viewer and Industry Reaction

The awkward moment on Good Morning Britain highlights the sensitivity surrounding ITV's cost-cutting efforts. Peters' joke, while intended as lighthearted, struck a nerve given the real-world impact on staff and programming. The competition segment, a staple of the show, continues despite the budget constraints, with Peters traveling to European cities to promote prizes. The Lisbon feature is part of a series of remote segments designed to engage viewers while keeping production costs manageable.
