Amy Dowden Praises Strictly Come Dancing's Impact During Personal Health Struggle
Professional dancer Amy Dowden has spoken publicly about the profound role Strictly Come Dancing played in supporting her through what she describes as "the darkest of times" during her breast cancer treatment. The Welsh performer, who received her diagnosis in 2023, has undergone chemotherapy and multiple mastectomies, with her health journey becoming a public campaign for awareness through her substantial social media following.
Emotional Testimony at Awards Ceremony
Speaking at the recent TV Choice Awards, Dowden shared her emotional perspective with the Press Association. "I never imagined facing a breast cancer diagnosis at 32," she revealed. "I'm determined to use my platform properly, in the best way possible, and I will continue doing so for the rest of my life to raise awareness, generate funds, and hopefully save lives."
The 35-year-old dancer made a courageous return to the BBC One competition during its latest series, partnering with former Apprentice star Thomas Skinner. Despite being the first couple eliminated from the competition, Dowden's participation represented a significant personal milestone during her ongoing recovery.
Strictly's Therapeutic Value for Patients
Dowden provided powerful insight into how the entertainment programme serves as therapeutic escapism for those facing serious health challenges. "I've been in the oncology unit receiving chemotherapy and witnessed what Strictly does for people going through really tough times," she explained. "It helps them through the winter months while battling something serious. It provides that vital escape from their reality."
She expressed particular pride in her involvement during treatment. "When I was undergoing chemo, seeing the joy the show brought people made me incredibly proud to be part of that magical television programme. Beyond entertainment, it has transformed attitudes toward dance for young boys in the UK and created career opportunities that have genuinely changed lives."
Frustration with Negative Focus
The professional dancer voiced disappointment about media attention shifting toward scandal rather than celebrating the programme's positive impact. "It saddens me that people can't focus on the wonderful show it is, choosing instead to concentrate on gossip or manufactured drama," Dowden stated.
She emphasized the programme's genuine achievements: "We should be celebrating beautiful friendships like Carlos Gu and Karen Carney's, which developed before our eyes on television, along with the spectacular routines. The essence is celebrities learning completely new skills and their remarkable transformations. The negativity frustrates me, but we must remain focused on what we know and believe in."
Recent Series Context and Controversies
The 23rd series concluded in December with former Lioness Karen Carney and professional dancer Carlos Gu claiming victory in an emotional finale. However, the series experienced several controversies that contrasted with Dowden's positive experience.
Her dance partner Thomas Skinner faced personal scandal after admitting to infidelity shortly after his wedding, alongside making allegations about the show's voting system. Additionally, Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans was dropped by the broadcaster following inappropriate language during the Strictly tour launch, while EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick faced suspension for allegedly using a disabled slur on set.
Carlos Gu Reflects on Victory
Professional dancer Carlos Gu, who accompanied Dowden on the red carpet and secured his first series win in December, reflected on the achievement. "This represents one of the biggest moments of my life," he shared. "I'd dreamt repeatedly about how winning would feel, but actually experiencing it made me feel extremely humble and calm."
Gu emphasized the deeper value beyond competition: "It made me realize it's not about fame or victory, but about genuine connection and authenticity. This was the first year I approached without expectations. Karen was extraordinary and helped me evolve in ways I'll forever appreciate."
Dowden continues to leverage her platform of over 727,000 Instagram followers to advocate for breast cancer awareness while balancing her professional commitments, demonstrating resilience that extends far beyond the dance floor.
