15-Acre Maze Honours David Attenborough's 100th Birthday

A 15-acre maize maze in North Yorkshire has been carved into a giant portrait of Sir David Attenborough to mark the broadcaster's 100th birthday. The aerial view reveals the naturalist's face alongside images of an elephant, a tiger, and a gorilla.

Design and Planting

York Maze announced the theme on Sir David's birthday in May. Over a million maize seeds were planted across the 15-acre field, and the design was cut once the plants began to emerge. The full likeness became visible as the crop matured, just in time for the maze's public opening on Saturday.

Previous Themes

The maze has featured various themes in past years, including Toy Story, Tutankhamun, a Lego minifigure, The Lion King, Star Wars, and Doctor Who.

Owner's Tribute

Farmer Tom Pearcy, owner of York Maze, stated: “Each year we choose a topical theme for the maze design. I grew up watching David Attenborough, he is an icon of British broadcasting and I’m honoured to make my contribution to his 100th birthday celebrations.”

Opening and Harvest

The Sir David Attenborough 100 Years on Planet Earth Maze will be open to the public from Saturday until September 3, after which the crop will be harvested.
