Arsene Wenger and John Terry were spotted in deep conversation during England's World Cup opener against Croatia, leaving fans intrigued about their discussion.
An Unexpected Duo
England's thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia was overshadowed for some viewers by the sight of former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and ex-Chelsea captain John Terry sitting together in the stands at Dallas Stadium. The pair, once central figures in the intense rivalry between Arsenal and Chelsea during the 2000s and 2010s, appeared to be engaged in a friendly chat.
Terry captained a Chelsea side that inflicted much pain on Wenger's Arsenal, particularly during Jose Mourinho's first stint at Stamford Bridge. However, there seemed to be no animosity between them, as they looked more like old friends.
Fan Reactions
ITV viewers were quick to share their surprise on social media. One fan posted: "John Terry sitting next to Wenger. Wtf." Another added: "Wenger chatting to John Terry, a true meeting of minds!" A third joked: "Someone turned up the crowd randomiser so much we ended up with an Arsene Wenger and John Terry collab."
A fourth fan quipped: "Wenger explaining the alphabet to John Terry and that the alphabet is different in different countries and that Croatia is a different country and yes, Modric is that old." One viewer cruelly remarked: "About 100 IQ points between them."
History of Mutual Respect
The cordial relationship between Terry and Wenger should not come as a surprise, given that the Frenchman once tried to sign the centre-back for Arsenal. The Gunners were linked with Terry again in 2016 as he prepared to leave Chelsea. While Wenger ruled out signing the then-35-year-old, he issued fulsome praise.
Wenger said: "He was not only a great player, he certainly still is, but he was also a great coach on the pitch. I saw him here once at London Colney [Arsenal's training ground] playing with the U21s and the way he coached the team as a player was absolutely marvellous."
He added: "He was a real leader and he had a great career as well, let's not forget that. That's never a coincidence. The guys who last such a long time have something special. He was the symbol of cohesion inside Chelsea's club because him, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and [Petr] Cech were the players who carried the club's values for long periods. When you lose players like that you're always in danger."
Wenger's Defence of Terry
Wenger even previously spoke out in defence of Terry after he was accused of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand during a match in 2012. While he said anyone found guilty of racial abuse should be punished, he argued that the heat of the moment should be taken into account. Terry, who was cleared in court, was subsequently found guilty by the FA, fined £220,000, and banned for four matches.
England's strong start to the World Cup has given fans plenty to be excited about, but the sight of Wenger and Terry deep in conversation added an unexpected talking point to the match.
