Portmeirion, a village tucked away on the cliffs of Gwynedd in North Wales, has captured the attention of Instagram users, with many saying it resembles an Italian seaside town. The village, designed by Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1976, features sun-drenched pastel facades, cobbled piazzas, and sweeping coastal views that evoke the Italian Riviera.
Unique Design and Attractions
Williams-Ellis aimed to show that developing a naturally stunning location need not ruin it. The village, managed by a charitable trust, is a "post-modern bricolage" incorporating salvaged elements from demolished historic buildings across Britain. It includes a central piazza, a giant human chessboard, a Riviera-style layout, and a lighthouse.
Surrounding the village is a 70-acre subtropical forest with 19 miles of pathways, hidden gardens, a ghost garden, a dog cemetery, and exotic trees like giant redwoods and monkey puzzles. Portmeirion also served as the filming location for the 1960s cult TV series The Prisoner, and fans can visit the on-site Prisoner Shop.
Accommodation and Visitor Experience
While thousands visit on day trips, Portmeirion primarily operates as a hotel resort, allowing guests to stay overnight. Accommodation includes grand hotels and 13 self-catering cottages, along with cafes, an Italian gelateria called Angel Ices, and formal dining rooms. Day visitors must purchase an admission ticket to enter the grounds.
The village's cliffside location means paths are steep and hilly, which may be challenging for those with limited mobility. It is accessible via Minffordd Railway Station, a mile away, serving local lines and heritage steam trains like the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.

Her post, despite her modest following, amassed over 38,000 likes. Bec wrote: "Walking around after dark felt like wandering through a film set." She praised the views, saying, "I've never been happier to wake up early," and added, "I think I said, 'this is so pretty,' every thirty seconds."
In her caption, she described Portmeirion as "a little bit Disneyland for adults who enjoy cruises... (affectionately). I've wanted to visit Portmeirion for years and it lived up to every expectation." She highlighted that after day tourists leave, "you have the whole village to yourself," and noted the experience of walking around after dark and before breakfast "completely changed" her perception.
